The Penny Lady

She is a strong-willed, correct and simple woman. She lives in Vila do Antigo Bonde and works at the open market, at a fruit stand. She got her nickname from her habit of giving out leftover food (xepa) to the poor.

She was abandoned by her husband and she raised her children, Édison and Rosália, on her own. Her biggest dream is for the two to move up in life, and for that she spares no effort.

However, she suffers with her children`s ingratitude, since they are ashamed of her humble way and peculiar speech: Xepa uses words wrong and she confuses sayings.
