Simeon

And the second son of Leah with Jacob. Leah said, “Because the LORD hath heard that I was despised, and he also gave me this one. And he called his name Simeon.” Simeon means “he heard it.” It seems that her cries of pain and anguish in the soul were finally heard by his God and, again, her shame and humiliation were relieved. With the name Simeon, Leah again cries out for the attention of Jacob, her husband. Leah said: “See that God does not approve of your contempt for me. I am your first wife and not my sister.” He is impetuous and inconsequential, always with his brother, Levi. When their sister, Dinah, is dishonored by the prince of Shechem, the two revolt, thirsting for vengeance. Jacob accepts the marriage and covenant proposed by the King of Shechem, who undertakes to have all the men of his city submit to circumcision. Simeon and Levi take advantage of the weakness of the men after the procedure and make a massacre in the city. The cowardly and vengeful act of the children fills Jacob with revolt and sadness and they are forced to leave the region, fearing reactions from other peoples.
